Explore We learned that photosynthesis only occurs during day and this process needs a light source, a carbon source and water. We want to investigate what light works better during photosynthesis.
Research Question What color works better during photosynthesis?
Predictions We think the green light will work better because it reflects all the other lights and absorbs the green light which we can see.
Experimental Design The materials that we are using is a light source, hole punches, paint brushes, baking soda, colored lights, rulers, syringes, and cups. The independent variables are cups, the carbon sources, the measures and the water. The dependent are the light and the time. The different types of lights.
Conclusion in conclusion, our prediction of the green light working better during photosynthesis was not completely wrong. The green light did work for the leaf disks but the controlled light did work the same as well. Which shows that the green can have the same effect as the controlled light on the leaf...

Hi, so I would like to point a few things out in your independent variables.

It's really great that you listed your materials and listed everything that could effect photosynthesis. But if you are using the same materials for all your plants (the cups, water, and carbon source) those aren't variables.

Remember: variables is when it is something different. Now if you had done different cup types (glass/plastic/etc) then that would be a variable.

I see you guys have decided on the hypothesis " What color works best during photosynthesis?" That's a great question. 

What colors are you going to choose? 

Something to keep in mind: You'll want the plants spaced out far enough that they don't overlap in colors.

Aaryn it's good that you understand what you don't understand. That's a key to learning and science. 

So independent variables are the thing you can manipulate.

Dependent variables are what change because of your independent variable. 

Here's an example: 

Maribella gets 5 hours of sleep every night. She notices that she is tired every day and wants to sleep during classes. 

So she decides to do an experiment. She changes her amount of sleep from 5 hours to 7 hours to see what happens. After a week of doing this she notices she doesn't want to fall asleep and she isn't as tired as before. 

In my example the independent variable is sleep. The dependent variable is energy levels.

What about everyone else? Do ya'll understand how carbon is making the leaves float?

    I don't fully understand why the leaf disks float in the different carbon sources because when she explains it I get most of and then I don't understand the dependent and independent variables.

I think that the leafs floated more in baking soda because it is a stronger carbon source

We did a leaf disk experiment in class and we learned that the cups with baking soda made more leaves float then with carbon dioxide and the cup with just water had no floating leaves but there were some people that put on their graph that the leaves in their water cup were floating

    Why do you think the baking soda made more leaves float?  Do you think those people actually had floating leaves?

in the lab we learned that because the control plant doesn't have a carbon source the disk leaves don't float. An error the teacher talk to us about was that at t-0 mins should not have any data but we made the mistakes there. To me biology can be difficult in a way, when you first learned biology what was hard for you?

    Did you find that result interesting? 

    Biology can be difficult. There are a lot of terms to think about and you have to think more of a "big" picture. 

    Cells were hard for me when I first started learning about biology. Keeping track of all the organelles was difficult and so was learning mitosis.

    Science is literally all around us. Ever been sick and had to take medicine? That medicine was developed by using science.    

    Eaten anything recently? That food has been grown through using science. 

    I think its important to remember that "science" is more of a tool. It allows us to determine what works best and what is "true" or not. 

    You can even conduct your own "science" in your everyday life. Whether it is seeing what foods taste best together or the best way to study.

I encourage everybody to check out PBS Eon's on youtube. They have a few videos about plants, but they also discuss other things like giant flying dinosaurs and giant insects.  

The videos are about 6-8 minutes long.

Hello everybody! 

My name is Courtney. I'm currently a Master's student in Biology at University of Nebraska-Omaha.  I am the blonde in my photo. 

Some things about me: I love reading and learning in general. I also enjoy weight lifting and exercise. I have two cats and my favorite place in the world is Ireland. 

Now to answer your question:

I love learning about pretty much everything. Our world has so many fascinating organisms. Poisonous birds, parasitic wasps, mammals without a stomach (it's the platypus), etc. I have been studying biology for over 5 years now and I am constantly amazed about the world we live in. 

Science in general is a terrific tool. It allows us to create wonderful things (like medicine) and to explore the world around us. The concept of science-that is studying the world through a systematic method-didn't really take off until around the 1800's. Before investigating the natural world wasn't done in a thorough way. As a result it took us forever to progress with knowledge. 

 

So to sum it up: I choose to work in science because I love learning new things and it is a spectacular tool that allows us to progress with knowledge.

I see three of you enjoy sports. What sports do you play?
