Explore There are two types of seeds, monocot and dicot. A pea is a dicot, meaning it has two cotyledons instead of one. Various plant beneficial microbes and fungi have shown to improve growth of seeds.
Research Question What is the effect of beneficial, microbial seed coats of the growth of pea plants? Background research in plant experiments showed that particular microbes can be instrumental in aiding the growth of plants. This steered the experiment to investigate the direct effect of beneficial microbes on the growth of pea plants. This can be related
Predictions When the beneficial microbe is applied to the pea seeds, the mass and size will increase.
Experimental Design 1. Seeds will be split into two groups of 30 each, experimental and control. The control will not receive the Rhizobium leguminosarum microbe but the experimental group will. 2. Culture the Rhizobium leguminosarum in agar plated petri dishes. 3. Record each mass and size of the seeds before planting them. 4. Apply the microbe to the experimental group. 5. Plant the seeds into crystal clay so they are easy to observe. One container would be used for the control, one for the experimental group. 6. Record qualitative observations every 24 hours, record germination time, and measure the size and weight of the seeds after 30 days. 7. Compare the measurements between each group and use a t-test to confirm statistical significance.
