Plant Gangggg

Project by group othsmikosspring2020

Explore Plants grow/thrive better in summer time. They also grow better after it rains. We know Carbon Dioxide-Light-water are all needed for the plants to do photosynthesis and grow. We want to know what would happen if plants had access to more carbon dioxide.
Research Question We want to see if more baking soda(carbon dioxide) with make the leaves preform photosynthesis faster. This relates to the real world example of there being more and more atmospheric carbon dioxide as more pollution occurs.
Predictions This could possibly cause the plant leaves to float faster or for the leaves to not float at all and kill them if there is too much. We think that the leaves will float more because there’s more carbon dioxide available to the leaves.
Experimental Design You will need 3 spinach leaves-a hole punch-2 cups filled with 3cm of water-a purple syringe and a clear one- a paint brush-and 3tsp of baking soda. First you will hole punch out 24 circles and put 12 in each syringe with the paint brush so u do not touch the leaves. Next you will put in the 3tsp of baking soda to the water and make sure it’s stirred. Next you will put all of the leaves at the bottom of the syringe and then suck up water about 3/4 of the way and get as little air as possible in the syringe. Put your thumb over the top of the syringe and pull down on the end in order to remove the air from the leaves but be sure to keep the leaves in the water. Once all leaves sink transfer them into the cups. Put the purple syringe leaves into the baking soda cup and the clear syringe into the water cup. Make sure your leaves don’t touch the air. Put both of the cups underneath a lamp at equal distance and record how many leaves float each minute until all are floating or until you hit 15 mins.
