they need sunlight and water, they have chlorophyll |
Research Question |
Does salt water or freshwater increase the production of photosynthesis? |
Predictions |
the leaves in the fresh water will go through photosynthesis faster |
Experimental Design |
- fill 2 different cups with 3-cm of water and 1tsp of baking soda
-in one cup put 1tsp of salt
-using a hole punch cut 20 disks of spinach- 10 for each cup
- use 2 different syringes and fill them with water- 1 syringe for each cup
-put leaves in syringe
-get the oxygen out of the leaves
-put the leaves back into the correct cups and put them under a light lamp
- record the number of disks floating each minute for 15 minutes |
Conclusion |
In conclusion, salt water does change the rate of photosynthesis, but is not the same as fresh water. In both cases carbon dioxide and water are present, so photosynthesis still occurs. The number of floating leave disks in the salt water was never the same as the non-salt water, however in one data set the leaves still floated in the salt water. To expand the results we can alter the amount of salt and collect data from the experiment. This will test if the amount of salt matters. |
