Explore We know that plants are the product of seeds germinating and that our plants needs sufficient sunlight, water and soil to germinate. We have chosen soil compaction as our independent variable in this experiment. All other factors will remain the same.
Research Question We are planning on researching how soil compaction affects the growth and germination of a corn seed. We chose this question because we wanted to see how important oxygen is for a corn seed to germinate.
Predictions We think that the seed will grow better in the soil that is less compacted. We think this because the oxygen will get to the seed more easily. Meanwhile if the soil is extremely compacted it will be a lot harder for the oxygen to reach the seed therefore making the seed grow more slowly.
Experimental Design We plan on using a hydraulic press to press the soil by 0.2, 0.5, and 1 ton. (1 of the pots was untouched). When it is pressed the seeds will be placed around the pot. We will be keeping the amount of sunlight, type and amount of soil, type of seed, and number of seeds the same throughout our experiment.
