What do we know about plants from our experiences outside of school? What have we discovered in class and background research? What questions about plants interest us?
Research Question What do we want to test or study? How did we come up with the question(s). How does the question fit what we know about the topic?
Predictions What are the possible outcomes of our study given the variables we are working with? What is our explanation for why and how we think this will happen?
Experimental Design What is our plan? Be sure to include enough detail that another group can replicate our experiment. What variables will we test? What variables will we measure and observe? What variables will we keep constant? How will we record our data?
Conclusion What claim can we make from our experiment? What are possible explanations for our results? How do the data we collected and our reasoning with scientific ideas support our claim? What future experiments could be done to expand on the results of this experiment?
About this Project

This team was diligent in its planning and really tried to collect data on Oxygen production with a clever setup. They communicated well with their scientist and wrote thoughtfully from the ideas they brainstormed about how to do their experiment. These 2 students did not shy away from trying...

We’re all waiting anxiously for an update, Team. Are you getting any results yet?

We are using anubias congensis. It is a water plant. we have two of those and now we will place one of them in a funnel with a test tube on the top of it so the oxygen is collected and we will fill it up with tap water. And for another set of those plant we will use distilled water and we will see in which method we get more oxygen

The funnels will be inside beakers full of water. Distilled water in one of them and tap water in the other one.

Which species of plant are you using?

Or is it plants? Can you please post more details of your experiment? Even photos will help us all understand.

That is going to be our experiment then and we are going to be planting our water plants tomorrow. Thank you for your support and help.

Here is what were thinking of doing on the water plant collecting oxygen.

Good job finding this method, Isfar and Anthony.

Check out the link that Anthony just shared. We are trying to do something simple like that so it is easy and not expensive. Let us know what to do because we are going to start working for this project on monday

I think this will work.  Do you want to compare the ability of two plants to make oxygen underwater, or you could also use two types of water and the same plant. For example, tap water and distilled would work. It won’t be easy to quantify the amount of oxygen with this method, but there could be a way to premeasure the test tubes and make small marks.

Here is our research question for which we will do experiments and find out an answer.

What is the amount of oxygen released by a water plant. We need test tubes and more materials for this experiment. Can you help us out about the materials that we need for doing this experiment.

The question is : What is the amount of oxygen released by any 1 type of water plant that we are going to choose for the experiment.

Hello students, search online (Google Scholar) for a project that has already been done on this subject first. I am concerned that you could need special and expensive equipment for this experiment. I’ll do my own search, as well. Good luck.

Calling a store where aquarium equipment is sold might be a good place to begin to learn about instruments that are used to measure dissolved oxygen. Water quality monitoring instruments are expensive and I don’t know your budget. It’s an interesting idea, though, and I think you would learn a lot from this particular experiment. You also need to decide on a particular plant or two you might want to study. Do you plan to use tap water, or some other type of water?

Here are some of our questions we were thinking about :

1. Can the same plants set different height after a same number of days?

2. How is the soil needed for a best plant growth?

3. If two same plants get everything same except the water. Will give one plant rain water and the other we will give mineral water and see any changes?

4. Can we tell how much oxygen is plants releasing every day?

    Candice Groat

Those are all very interesting questions. Can you think of testing some specific component of soil that is needed for optimal growth? Or possibly comparing effects of soil types on growth would work. Regarding oxygen release, you might want to look for research projects that have already been done on this subject. It shouldn’t be difficult to find background material on Google Scholar, for example.

Hello Ms. Groat. I am Anthony and I am a sophomore at Northeast High School. I hope that you are fine with this. I have been assigned to as you our mentor with my other 2 mates that we have a project, or more like a experiment together to complete. I hope you can be our mentor through this and help us complete this experiment.
