Plants are a carbon-based life form. We have learned about Nature vs Nurture, which means that a genotype influences some things that you are born with, like eye color, hair color, etc and phenotype changes based on the environment you live.
One question we have is: do human hobbies affect plants, such as music, compliments, etc? |
Research Question |
Does the amount of fertilizer have an affect on the number of flowers and buds or the height? We came up with this question by looking at the discrete and quantitative traits and chose these three. The questions fits the topic because we are observing the effect of the amount of fertilizer on the plant. We think that the fertilizer will affect the amount of flowers and height because the nutrients in the fertilizer will help the plant grow. It will not change the stem color because it has to do with the genotype not the phenotype. |
Predictions |
Each plant we observe will have varying answers, as they are quantitative traits. Our prediction is that the plant with less fertilizer will grow slower, and the flowers would be the same just grown at different times. We think this will happen because fertilizer helps plants grow, therefore less fertilizer would help the plant less. |
Experimental Design |
Plant the Brassica
Stem color:
See what color the majority of the stem is per plant every week
Record it in a pie chart google sheets
Compare using chi squared
Number of flowers:
Count number of flowers every week
Record and graph it in google sheets
Compare the average and which bin in a histogram is largest
Number of buds:
Count number of buds every week
Record it in google sheets
Compare the average and which bin in a histogram is largest
Height:
Measure the height of each plant in millimeters every week
Record it in google sheets
Compare the average and which bin in a histogram is largest |
