We did some research on the Nasturtium plants which we are using , and we know that in order for the seeds to germinate, they need to be in darkness. the seeds require little water, and they don't grow well in cold, windy conditions. Nasturtiums grow well in dry poor soils. |
Research Question |
What pH level will make the Nasturtium seeds sprout the fastest? And what pH is more effective? We all wanted to work with chemicals and the topic was seed germination. We want to see which pH will increase the seeds germination period. |
Predictions |
We predict that the water with a pH of 7 will have the seeds with the most germination. We say this because tap water is a pH of 7 and that is what most plants get watered with. Also the other solutions might be to acidic or basic for the plants over long periods of time. |
Experimental Design |
First we tested the pH of the of our solutions ranging from 5.5-7.5. to get the right pH we used pH test strips. Next we counted 20 seeds for each petri dish. Then we put the seeds in the solution. After that put them in a box and covered the box with a piece of wood to keep it dark. We put our seeds that are in the solution in the greenhouse for a controlled in environment. We watched the seeds for 20 days and monitored their state everyday. We added solution as needed and on the 12th day replaced the old solution and got rid of the mold that had grown in the petri dishes. |
