Explore Plants need some form of soil or paper to act as a base to begin germination, but not only that, they need a certain amount of water, oxygen, room, etc. Pearl Millet takes 2-4 days to germinate under favorable conditions. -Pearl Millet is mainly grown in western Africa and the subcontinent of India -Rich in antioxidants -A healthier version of rice because they are full of proteins and fibre
Research Question How does the amount of light our plant gets affect the color the pearl millet grows to be?
Predictions If the seed gets less light, it will be a lighter shade. We think this because plants with more light get more pigment.
Experimental Design -Take four Petri dishes and cover the bottom with fancy paper towels -Pour 16 ml of water into each petri dish -Add three Pearl Millet seeds to each petri dish -Put two Petri dishes into a cardboard box away from light and the other two into a box with a lamp -Turn on the lamp at the beginning of the day and off at the end of class every day -Take a picture of the plants every day in class, and scale-out the color. -Continue to watch the seeds’ color throughout the week
Conclusion Claim: A plant’s sprout will be more pigmented if it is in sunlight. Evidence: A plant’s sprout will be more pigmented if it is in sunlight because in our data, the seeds in the dark ranged from -1-0 pigmentation on our color graph(which is white/yellowish/lime). Along with that, our data clearly shows how the plants in the dark slowly started to go into the negatives as the Chlorophyll started to die out. Meanwhile with our plants in the light, they began to turn more green and pigmented having a median of 3 and the graph ranged from 0-6.5. Although there were some faults in the testing and investigation, overall it seems like the more light a plant receives the more pigmented or green it will appear. Reasoning: A scientific reason behind why the sprouts were more green in the light is because in a plant, chlorophyll is used to make the green color. With less light, less chlorophyll will be produced. The lights in the dark also had a different amount of water because they used less water. Their color might have meant they were dehydrated or too hydrated.
