Explore They use photosynthesis to get sunlight to make glucose. Plants can do cellular respiration with the glucose produced by photosynthesis. Plants can use carbon dioxide that floats through the air to grow, as well as water.
Research Question Would the type of liquid change the speed of germination for a plant?
Predictions Liam~ I think that water will germinate the quickest because it is what the plant is used to. Anthony~ I think that coke will germanite the quickest because of the carbon and sugar. Isaac~i think that the straigh lemon juice will grow the most because it has natural fruit juice. Will~ I think that the kombucha tea will cause the plant to grow faster because of the bacteria and nutients in it.
Experimental Design step 1: Set petri dishes out on a table. step 2: dampen 5 different paper towels, with there individual kinds of liquid, set them into separate Petri dish. step 3: put 8 Buckwheat seeds into each petri dish, spread each seed out equally. step 4: wait for seeds to sprout, and watch observe how they have changed each day. Independent variable: Type of liquid. Dependent variable: Germanation speed. Controlled varibles: temperature: room temperature. amount of liquid: 4 milimeters.
Conclusion Claim: Water works best to increase the speed of germination over other liquids such as kombucha, Coca-cola, and lemon juice. Evidence: The water worked best over Lemon, coca-cola, and kombucha. On day 1 all seeds did not germinate. On day 2 there was an average of .07cm grown. On day 3 the average length of the seed is 2.76cm. On day 4 the average length of the seed was 4.46cm. On day 5 the average length of the seed was 4.5cm. Reasoning: The water worked the best because the other drinks all had sugar in them. With high levels of sugar, the plant may not absorb the water. sugar can also feed bacteria with could severely damage the plant. For lemon, it contains dangerous sugar like all other fruit juices. Juices are also acidic which is not good for a plant. This is why lemon and kombucha did not work well because they were fruit juices. Coca-cola had lots of sugar so that's why its seeds did not grow much.
