Research Question |
Which seed, corn, pearl millet or alfalfa, will germinate the fastest in 70 degrees? |
Predictions |
If the environment is 70 degrees, then we believe pearl millet will germinate the fastest. We think this because when we looked up the seeds, we learned that pearl millet will germinate in 2-4 days in warm weather (75-90 degrees). We learned that if the temperature of the soil is 65 degrees fahrenheit, then alfalfa will germinate in 2-6 days, but if the temperature is 40 degrees it will take 6 days to grow. Corn will take the most amount of time: in 70 degree weather it takes 5-8 days and it takes 10-14 days if colder. |
Experimental Design |
Independent Variable: (corn vs alfalfa vs pearl millet)
Dependent Variable: Which seed will grow the fastest (measure the seeds and take note of how many seeds germinate earlier)
Variables to Control: Same amount of water and same time, same temperature, same environment, same number of paper towels, Same sunlight
1. Gather 3 plastic bags, 3 paper towels, and 10 seeds each of corn, pearl millet and alfalfa.
2. Fold up the paper towel, place 10 of the same seeds in the paper towel.
3. Give the seeds 3-4 drops of water each every day.
4. Fold the paper towel so it covers the seeds. Put the paper towel in the plastic bag.
5. Put the plastic bag under the grow lights in a room that is 70 degrees.
6. Every day look at the seeds and count how many have roots and measure how long the roots are. |
