Research Question |
How does the amount of water affect how fast Alfalfa seeds germinate? |
Predictions |
Our group has different predictions. Nan, Seth and Sloan predict that 20 drops of water is the best amount to germinate the 10 seeds. Scott predicts that 40 drops is the best to germinate the 10 seeds, and Zack predicts that 30 drops is the best to germinate all 10 seeds! |
Experimental Design |
Get a paper towel and put it in a plastic bag with 10 alfalfa seeds.
Add water every day. Each person will add a different amount of water:
Zack = 10 drops
Seth = 20 drops
Sloan = 30 drops
Zeben = 40 drops
Scott = 50 drops
Record how much each seed grew each day. |
Conclusion |
Claim: Seeds that got 50 drops germinate the fastest.
Evidens: On the last two day 50 drops graw [51 mm] twice and all graw [13.3 mm], [6 mm], {31 mm], and [9 mm].
Reasoning: This happened because there was more amounts of water so the plant had more energy to grow and make the roots bigger. I think this is a fair test because everybody had a chance to pick the amount of water that they were doing no matter how good or bad they thought the experiment would go. Everything else besides the amount of water was the same. This is what I expected to happen.
Seth added This happened because the more water it has the faster it germinates. It can absorb more water causing it to grow faster and if it can’t do photosynthesis so it uses the energy stored in the seed to help grow, and water helps this. The key ingredients to use the glucose is water, so all it needs to help it grow is the water. If there’s more water it grows faster. I think that there can be more water, but 50 drops is not too much. I think this is a fair test because we each did a certain amount of water, but everything else was the same. This is not what I expected. I expected 50 to start molding and 20 to grow the fastest. |
