Explore Germination ends when the shoot emerges from the soil. The environmental conditions cause germination to differ from plant to plant. Dermination is the act of plants waiting for the right time to start to grow. The first step in germination is imbibition when dry seed absorbs water.
Research Question How do different variations of water affect the germination of plants?
Predictions If different variations of water are offered to plants then a sugar solution will result in faster growth than other solutions because this solution will contain minerals and will not hurt the plant. (Fix later)
Experimental Design Step One: Gather supplies. This includes six bags, 39 radish seeds, three beaker for solutions, six paper towels, three pipette, salt, sugar, gram scale, and water. Step Two: Gather your salt, sugar, beakers, and scale. Take your beaker and fill it with 500mL of of water repeat for all three. Place one aside, on the scale place a cup on the scale and pour one gram of salt into it then pour the salt into one of the beakers. Stir and repeat for sugar. Then place a saran wrap secured by rubber bands across the top. Step Three: Take your paper towels, baggies, and radish seeds. Place 6-7 seeds in each bag. Label two bags one of each type of water. Place your seeds inside of your paper towel. Take your solutions and pipette water generously across the towel until wet. Fold the towel to form 4-5 creases and place in a sealed baggie. Step Four: Let seeds grow, record how many germinated each day and once there is steams record how many centimeters long it is . Record how seed looks, draw pictures or take them with progress. Water plants every other day.
Conclusion When you give plants access to different variations of water the data will be inconclusive. Our data supports this claim. On day one salt and tap both had 12 out of 13 germinate. Sugar had 11 out of 13 germinated. But, by Day Two all 13 of all the seeds germinated. Also, throughout the experiment no noticeable change was between the seeds exterior. This most likely occurred because plants don’t start focusing on needing water until photosynthesis comes into play. We were studying the germination patterns; therefore, the different types of water would not affect germination because it is not a key partner in the process. We are somewhat confident in our data due to the fact that multiple human errors would of occurred.
