Germination is the process in which the organism grows from a seed or similar structure, milk provides extra nutrients but it can spoil |
Research Question |
How does the type of liquid affect the time it takes to germinate? |
Predictions |
If I change the liquid used for germination, then the water will be the most effective for germination. This is because the milk would spoil and the water already works perfectly fine. |
Experimental Design |
Materials: Milk, Water, Apple Cider, seed, Petri Dish, Paper towel,
Procedure:
First we will put 6 seeds in 3 petri dishes, 2 for each one
Then we will plant the seeds in their respective dishes,
Then we will put the petri dishes in the cupboard and water them with their respective liquids every 24 hours.
We will measure how long it takes them to come to 10 cm
Then we will stop recording after it reaches 10 cm diameter |
Conclusion |
Water is the best/healthiest liquid for seeds to germinate the fastest. Water was best because the water can't mold, where other liquids like the Apple cider and Milk had mold. Also the seeds became fuzzy after a while which was because of mold and I think it affected the growth/germination rate of the plants. When water was used we had 9/10 seeds that germinated, when Apple Cider was used then we had 2/10 seeds that germinated, and when we used milk we had 3/10 seeds that germinated. This happened because with the water it helped the reactions in the cells because it was a very watery medium. Where as Apple cider was a slimmer liquid not and not as condensed as water, and Milk was over condensed compared to water. So that affected the reactions and wouldn't really allow photosynthesis. I think that this experiment would be better if we had new Apple Cider and new Milk because then it wouldn't mold as easy. |
