Explore We know that plants have 2 stages the germination and when it comes out of the ground and that most plants need sunlight and water to survive. The question we are conducting is how will the type of water affect how well a edamame bean will grow.
Research Question We want to test how the type of water affects how fast a soybean germinates. We came up with the question by looking at what we wanted to know. It fits what we know about the topic because we
Predictions If we water the plant with tap water it will grow faster then if we water the bean with any other water.
Experimental Design 1. Get four plastic bags 2. Get 4 different spray bottles (10 oz) and add 1 tsp of baking soda to the first bottle, 1 tsp of sugar to 2nd bottle, 1 tsp of salt to the 3rd bottle, and 9.5 oz of normal tap water to the 4th bottle 3. Add 9.5 oz of tap water to bottle 1, bottle 2, and bottle 3. 4. Put on the top of the spray bottle and shake the bottles for 10 seconds to mix the solution. 5. Get your Soybeans beans and your plastic bags. 6. Take four plastic bags and put numbers on them ( 1, 2, 3, and 4) 7. Put a sheet of paper towel in each plastic bag and 10 Edamame beans in each bag 8. Put numbers on your solution bottles. The bottle that says the number of the bag is the bottle you will use to spray (water) the Edamame beans. 9. Lift up the paper towel that is covering the beans until the paper towel that is under the beans is wet. (4-5) (Do this everyday.) 10. Repeat step 9 for 6 days.
Conclusion Claim: In comparison to baking soda, salt, and sugar water, the tap water grew the beans that fastest. Evidence: Out of all the seeds that we put different types of water in the one that germinated most was the tap water because it had a normal mixture that it needs to live. By day 5 all 10 tap water beans had germinated. 5 out of 10 sugar water beans germinated lastly none of the baking soda or salt water beans germinated. Reasoning: The reason none of the sugar water beans germinated was because we over watered them and they had no oxygen. The reason that all 10 of the tap water beans germinated that is the water without any added chemicals. Therefore the tap water beans grew the most. The baking soda beans didn't grow at all because the baking soda had too many added chemicals that the beans cant handle. causing it to react by not germinating. The reason the salt water beans didn't grow was because we watered them too much so the salt was cutting off oxygen to the bean which was making it moldy.
