Explore I know that plants germinate when the conditions are right and that plants use sunlight to do photosynthesis to make glucose for energy. Plants require nutrients, water, carbon dioxide, and some source of light to grow. Plants can survive for thousands of years before germinating. plants can store glucose in their leaves, or inside the seed coat. Plants use photosynthesis to combine water and carbon dioxide into glucose with the help of sunlight. plants can do cellular respiration to turn glucose into ATP.
Research Question How does the color of light affect germination?
Predictions If we give the plant white light it will grow the fastest because it carries more energy than any other color of light.
Experimental Design 1. Take 12 Petri dishes and put 1 sheet of paper towel in them 2. Put 5 mustard seeds in each dish and 3 dishes under each light 3. put 1 light above each set, each light a different color but the same intensity inside of a box 4. put 10 milliliters of water in each dish 5. repeat step 4 if paper towel is dry and measure the plant growth.
Conclusion If you give a plant blue light, then plants will grow slightly better than with other colors of light. Based on the data, the plants under blue light did grow the best for a while, but then they started to turn yellow and had their leaves falling off. White light was the most consistent in growth, but it didn’t grow as much as blue. The blue light grew to 5 cm, while the next best color, Black, grew to 3.9 cm. According to the article The Effects of Light on Germination and Seedlings, Blue light is the best for leaf growth. Blue light is also the easiest for plants to absorb, making it easier for the plant to do photosynthesis.
