Explore We know about what is needed for photosynthesis and what comes out as well as cellular respiration.
Research Question How does using a different liquid affect the growth of a seedling.
Predictions If you add water to a plant it will grow faster than if you give it other liquids. This is because plants need water to do photosynthesis so they grow faster.
Experimental Design Place 4 paper towels in 4 different Petri dishes (1 per petri dish) Place 20 drops of each liquid (water, 2% milk, diet coke, orange juice) on each liquids own paper towel Place 3 alfalfa seeds on each paper towel Sit overnight on the counter measure the growth of the sprout repeat steps 2, 4, 5 every day for 4 days
Conclusion My results are inconclusive. Our results are inconclusive because over half of our seeds didn’t germinate. The coke seeds had an average of 2.3 cm of growth on the last day. All the other seeds had an average growth of under .7 cm on the last day. We did not have much growth at all which is why our data is inconclusive. We did not have enough data to get good results. We think we didn’t get much germination because of multiple things: liquid temperature, acidity levels, and amounts of sugar. We had to refrigerate the liquids so they wouldn’t spoil and we found out that cold liquids stunt seed germination and plant growth. We also tested the acidity of the liquids. Orange juice was super acidic and the seeds never grew. Lastly, there are different amounts of sugar in the liquids. For example, in 30 drops of Coke, there are 1.65 grams of sugar, and in 30 drops of water, there is 0. So based on that coke shouldn’t grow too well and water would grow significantly more. Our results are inconclusive because the water seeds didn’t grow. Only one of them grew, and it was only .1 cm.
