Silly Squids

Project by group dmsgrayspring2021

Explore Before they have any leaves they need no sunlight that is all energy from the seed once it has leaves it uses sunlight as its energy and as soon as it has leaves it begins cellular respiration and photosynthesis. It doesn't need sunlight till it has leaves and is green Therefore the actual seed has a lot of energy because it needs to be able to grow roots and a stalk and leaves and turn green but once they get past that point they use sunlight.
Research Question How willl the possitions of the the seeds effect the way the seed grows on will face up and the other down and the other on its side.
Predictions We predict that the one facing down will germinate the fastest because it will have gravity pulling out the stalk and roots
Experimental Design 1. Get three petri dishes 2. Put 1 sponge in each dish 3. Put three seeds in different dishes but all in the same position 4. Repeat step 3 two more times in the other 2 dishes 5. put 60 ml of water in each dish every Monday and Thursday 6. Repeat step 5 until one of the groups of seeds has germinated
Conclusion Claim: If we put corn seeds sideways then they will germinate the fastest. Evidence: When we put corn seeds sideways they will germinate the fastest. This is true because when I had seeds upside-down they grew an average of 1 mm on day 7. The seeds that faced up grew an average of 3.33 mm on day 7, and my sideways seeds grew an average of 7.33 mm on day 7. Reasoning: These results don’t support scientific knowledge. Most scientists claim that it is better to have seeds facing downwards so that the root can grow straight down. They say this because it takes energy that is supposed to be used for growing the plant, to rotate the seed the correct way so that the root and stem come out of the seeds the correct way. The seeds is able to rotate because it has hormones in it that respond to gravity. It also says that orientation is not such of a big factor in smaller seeds. Some other research says that orientation of the seeds does not affect how fast a seeds germinates. I do not believe that this was a fair test because not all of the seeds were in the correct position all of the time and I do not think that the rightside-up and downwards seeds got enough water. Also some of the time the dishes got knocked over so the seeds didn’t stay how the were supposed to at some points. Another thing is that with the sideways seeds the sponge was kind of ripped up so the seeds were not always in the sponge.
