How does the amount of soil a seed has effect the time it takes to germinate? |

If the seed has more soil (2.5cm) then the seed will germinate faster. |
Experimental Design |
1. Cut the bottom of a plastic bottle off. Repeat for all 5 bottles. (cut off ruffly 2 inches)
2. Fill each cup with a different amount of soil. Fill the first bottle with 1 cm of soil. In the second bottle add 1.5 cm of soil. in the third bottle fill it with 2 cm of soil. Fill the forth bottle with 2.5 cm of soil. finally in the last bottle fill it with 3 cm of soil
3. place the seeds in the middle of the soil (make sure each seed is completely covered)
4. Give each cup 15 ml of water (repeat every day)
5. Record the size of the seed and if the seed has sprouted at all (on data table) by measuring with a ruler. |
Conclusion |
We can conclude that the seeds with more soil germinated the fastest. We know this because, for day 1 cup 1 (1 cm. of soil) had 0 plants germinated, cup 2 (1.5 cm.) had 3 seeds germinated, cup 3 (2 cm.) had 1 seed germinated. We think cup 3 could have only had 1 seed germinated because we could have gave this cup too much water and drowned the seeds. Cup 4 (2.5 cm.) had 4 seeds germinated, and lastly cup 5 (3 cm.) had 4 seeds germinated. Then on day 8, cup 1 had 5 seeds, cup 2- 4 seeds, cup 3- 5 seeds, cup 4- 5 seeds, and lastly cup 5 had 5 seeds germinated. |
