Research Question |
We have many research questions that we are interested in:
1) How does the concentration of baking soda in the infiltrating liquid and the cup affect the rate of photosynthesis in the leaf disk experiment?
2) How does the concentration of CO2 from blowing in with a straw in the infiltrating liquid and the cup affect the rate of photosynthesis?
3) Do we need to have CO2 in the infiltrating liquid or will it diffuse fast enough so that water alone is sufficient? Will it work? |
Predictions |
We predict that if there is less CO2 in any form, the disks will float slower because if you don't have CO2 then you can't do photosynthesis.
We predict that disks infiltrated with CO2 water will float faster than ones infiltrated with normal water. |
Experimental Design |
Independent Variable: Amount of CO2 from baking soda or breath AND infiltration with water v. CO2-water
Dependent Variable: Time it takes the disks to float
Steps: For each concentration of baking soda we will have one person punch out 20 disks from one spinach leaf. We will divide that into two groups and place each in a separate syringe. We will infiltrate one with the solution in the cup and the other with plain water. We will collect the time that it takes 50% of the disks to rise from the bottom of the cup. |
