Research Question |
We want to test the effect of changes in pH levels on the germination of C-Fern spores. We came up with the question through trial and error of different questions, and we came to a consensus on this topic. |
Predictions |
We predict that the more basic the pH solution is, the faster the germination rate is because C-Ferns prefer more basic environments. The more acidic the solution is, the slower the germination rate will be because acid generally has a negative effect on cellular growth. |
Experimental Design |
We plan to alter the pH off the solution the spores are placed in while they grow. The growth rate of the spores will be measured the the amount of mass they gain. Each set of spores will be placed in a petri dish with the same amount of agar (for nutrition for the plants) and will have approximately the same density. The four environments will have separate pH levels of 2, 4, 6 (which is the control) and 7. Every five days, the mass of the dishes will be measured and recorded along with observations. The experiment will be measured during thee germination period of the spores. |
Conclusion |
In contrast to our prediction, the C-Ferns grew surprisingly well in all four environments. They adapted best to the lower pH environments, and overall grew very well compared to the control. Our data proves that C-Ferns can adapt to different environments and persevere long enough to germinate in even very acidic conditions. |
