Explore Seeds sprout and grow once they are in their ideal environment. This period of growth is called germination. The amount of time it takes for the seed to germinate can be determined by several factors, such as temperature, moisture, and light. (Sources, APA format) Allman, M. (2016, October 07). Research Question For our research we were thinking of studying how soaking a seed in water affects the plant's germination. After brainstorming, we concluded that soaking the seeds was the most test-worthy idea. We know seeds can germinate after a long time with the right conditions so what happens when they are soaked in water before being planted? Does it still allow for the conditions to be met? How does soaking a plant in water before affect its time to germinate?
Predictions The seeds soaked in the longest period of time will have the fastest rate of germination. This is due to moisture received over a long period of time. Water absorption is the first step of germination.
Experimental Design Our plan is to use 50 seeds. 10 seeds will not be soaked (the control group), 10 seeds will be soaked for an hour, 10 seeds will be soaked for two hours, and the last 10 seeds will be soaked for three hours. We will also have a group of 10 seeds submerged under water the entire procedure. Our independent variable is how long the seed is soaked in the water while our dependent variable is how long the seed takes to germinate. The amount of sunlight and water given will be a constant variable. We will record our data daily through observations. For this experiment once the seed sprouts it will have germinate. The days until germination will be recorded for each seed. We plan for the experiment to last a week.
