While observing various trees in our neighborhoods, we noticed that different types of trees had different types of characteristics (split bark, exposed roots, etc.). Using a benefit calculator online, we also found how the different type, size, health, etc. of the trees provided different benefits for the surrounding communities. |
Research Question |
How do palm trees (Arecaceae) in public and private properties in a city differ in overall health? |
Predictions |
We believe that the palm trees on public land will have more consistent leaf coloration, better soil, and the least amount of bark fallout. We believe this because the city has a responsibility to upkeep the trees on their properties whereas on private property, the owner can do as they please with their trees. |
Experimental Design |
Our plan is to observe various palm trees in a city and record our observations. We will observe the leaf coloration, soil type, and bark fallout. Since our project is based on qualitative results, we will not be measuring any variables, only observing. We will keep constant the species of the tree and the city where the trees are observed. Through observation, we will record the leaf coloration, soil qualities, and bark fallout through data tables.
PROCEDURE
1. Locate 5 palm trees in public properties.
2. Locate 5 palm trees in private properties.
3. Record leaf observations for all trees.
4. Record soil type for all trees.
5. Record bark fallout for all trees.
6. Compare results of tree health from public and private properties. |
