Tree Watchers

Project by group camsdavisspring2021

Research Question How does the location of a palm tree impact the health of the tree the most? (park, outside a residential home, middle of the street)
Predictions We predict that the palm trees in the park are going to have longer branches, thicker trunks, and more leaves when compared to the palm trees outside of residential home as well as trees in the divider of a street. We think this will be the case because the trees in the park will have much more space to grow and will have a consistent stream of water and sunlight.
Experimental Design What is our plan? -Pick a palm tree species that can be found in each of these areas (park, outside a residential home, near the street) -Make sure that the locations of this tree are all within the same city. -Locate your tree species in a park and measure the diameter of the trunk with a measuring tape (dbh), estimate the tree's fullness (leaves) i.e 70% 80% 90%, etc., count the number and size of the cankers, and the number of exposed roots. Repeat this for the 2 other locations. (outside a residential home and near a street). -Record your data and compare the results to see how location impacts the health of that tree species. What variables will we test? The variable we will test is the location of the tree. What variables will we measure and observe? Observe the Health of tree -Diameter of trunk -Tree Fullness -Number of Cankers -Size of cankers -Number of exposed roots What variables will we keep constant? -Type of Tree -City where the tree is located -Tree care(meaning leaving water received stagnant) How will we record our data? We will record the diameter of the truck with a measuring tape, and count the number of leaves, the number of cankers, and the number of exposed roots. We will then compare the results of our data and come to a conclusion on how the location of the palm tree impacts the health of the tree.
