Explore We know that plants are a broad category and you have to plant it in the soil and water it as needed and put it by the sunlight as needed. We discovered plants are broken up into two categories: monocots and dicots. 1.) Is every plant edible? 2.) What is the shortest plant in the world? 3.) What are common problems with plants? 4.) Are the majority of plants harmful to people? 5.) Why do some plants have to be planted in the sun? 6.) Why do some plants have to be planted in the dark? 7.) How long can a plant survive without it needing water?
Research Question If we test water levels then we want to grow two plants with different water levels to see how the water affects a plant's germination. We thought it would be cool to test water levels because we want to know how it will affects a plant's growth. We know that water is an integral portion of a plant's growth, so, if different water levels impact something on a plant's growth we want to know how.
Predictions We think that more water will make the plant grow faster, and less water will make the plant grow slower. We think that more water will make it grow faster because it has more water to absorb and grow from. We think that a plant will grow slower with less water because it will be dehydrated.
Experimental Design We plan to have four pots with the same amount of soil but each pot has different amounts of water. We also plan to measure 1/2 cup of water in one pot and 1 cup of water in a second pot. We plan to measure these every 24 hours. We will be testing different water levels. We will be observing how it affects a plant's growth and compare each plant to each other. We will water the plants at the same time each day. We will record our data by writing down the healthiest to least healthiest plant each day, then when our experiment is done we will average the score for each pot and see which amount of water is the best amount for a plants growth out of the four measurements we chose. Material List: 1) 2- solo cups (pots) 2) 1- measuring cups 3) Bag Soil 4) 80- Nasturtium Seeds 5) 1- Ruler 6) 2- Paper 7) 2- Pencil
Conclusion While doing our experiment we concluded that more water makes the plants grow faster. We know that because most of our plants that grew or grew first were watered 1 cup instead a 1/2 cup of water. Our data supports our claims because we documented that plants from the 1 cup category grew. Future experiments that could be done to extend our results would be having a broader category of water measurements, because we only did 2.
