Explore We chose to do pea plants because we both like peas. We have both grown plants such as beans, cucumbers, carrots, and flowers. We are excited to see how different soil types might effect the growth of the pea plant. We have discovered that they can adapt to colder weather. They also have white or pink flowers. The peas are the seed that we will plant. Peas are very healthy for you. They were also experimented on by Gregor Mendel. Do they thrive with more or less water? Do they need more light?
Research Question We want to test to see which pea plant faster grows than the others. We want to see how different soil types can affect the germination process. Because we have grown other plants before, and peat moss soil is a moister soil while cactus soil is a draining soil, and we will be using potting soil as well.
Predictions We think that if we use different soils three separate pea plants then one of them will grow faster than the other.
Experimental Design Materials: Peat Moss soil, Cactus soil, Potting soil, big Dixie cups, water, Pea plant seeds, Procedures: 1. Gather all materials 2. Put the Peat Moss soil in a cup to about 3/4 of the cup 3. Put the Pea plant seed in the soil of each cups 4. Cover the seed with more dirt filling the cup to almost the rim 5. Put both cups in the same place with the same amount of sunlight 6. Repeat all steps for the Cactus soil and potting soil so each type of soil has ten cups of that type with only one see in it 7. Water once a week or when soil is dry
Conclusion I would think that the results supported the hypothesis because a certain soil grew faster than the others so our experiment worked. I learned that it takes a lot of work to maintain plants but it also teaches responsibility to take care of things. If I was able to change anything in this experiment then I would add corn to the projects to have more variety. The challenges I faced were when Kate and I would miss a measurement and find out the day after and we would have to backtrack. What went well was that Kate and I worked very hard and well together. The question I would have is how could we do this lab better?
