What do you do when you’re hungry? How do you cope with stress? Maybe you “get up and get a snack” and “take a break, go for a walk”. Now, imagine you were a plant. Not so easy, right? As stationary beings, plants must get water and nutrients and cope with stress without leaving their place. In my research, I study the many clever ways plants evolved to survive when soils don’t have enough nutrients or have too much salt, heavy metals, or other elements that make plants sick.

  • Profile Question 3
What is tough about being a scientist?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 3 here (300 words):
The disconnect between the "big picture" and what your day-to-day activities are. Progress is slow, so you have to enjoy the lab, the daily routine, and learn to be ok when things fail.
