  • Profile Question 1
What is your favorite plant? Why?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 1 here (300 words):
My favorite plant would have to be the wild columbine, Aquilegia canadesis. Growing up in Wisconsin where you could find this plant growing both natively and cultivated in gardens, I was always fascinated by their unique shape, particularly their striking nectar-containing spurs from which only hummingbirds were able to feed from. Later I learned of the many other species of columbine, each having different lengths of spurs which was closely tied to the type of pollinator for that species. In fact, Aquilegia is a perfect example of how changing environmental conditions (in this case, pollinator availability) can drive evolutionary changes in plant morphology.

  • Profile Question 2
What is best about being a scientist?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 2 here (300 words):
The best thing about being a scientist is the variety of challenges you encounter throughout your research process. Whether you work in the field or in a lab, you will always encounter something unexpected and exciting that lets you engage your curiosity. In this way, every day presents a new challenge and an opportunity to connect with new ideas and perspectives.

  • Profile Question 3
Do you have advice for students about preparing for a science career?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 3 here (300 words):
I would say to students thinking about a science career to be sure to make time for pursuing secondary interests as well, as those skills might prove valuable in the future as science continues to become more and more multidisciplinary. Entire new fields are emerging at the boundaries between engineering and biology, social science and ecology, medicine and computer science, and so on. Besides, the best job you can have is one that integrates all of your interests!

Hi folks! How are your seeds coming along - have any of them germinated yet? Aside from the water, are there any other germination conditions you are testing?
