Scientist Mentor: I will mentor teams of students online

  • Research Interests (300 words)
I am a MS candidate at Portland State University. My research interests include understanding how plants evolve and adapt through time. I find it particularly interesting how plants mutate while under stress and how that impacts their success as the climate changes.

  • Profile Question 1
What is best about being a scientist?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 1 here (300 words):
The best thing about being a scientist is having the opportunity to explore things that have yet to be studied. I enjoy being able to problem solve and devise a plan to do so because it often involves having a variable lifestyle. Each day I find myself do something different whether that includes working in the greenhouse, extracting DNA in the lab or writing.

  • Profile Question 2
What lessons have you learned in your career about how science works?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 2 here (300 words):
Science involves a lot of trial and error. Sometimes that can be frustrating but I have learned that it is important to keep trying because when things finally work out the reward is priceless.

  • Profile Question 3
What is your favorite plant? Why?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 3 here (300 words):
My favorite plant is called Mother of Thousands (Bryophyllum daigremontianum)! It is a succulent plant that does not produce flowers and instead it produces baby clones on the each serration of their leaves. Sometimes you can even see the plantlets developing roots while still attached to their mother plant.

  • Capacity: How many teams at a time are you comfortable working with?

Wow this a great figure! Good job! It is very interesting that 1 gram of salt had better effect than the control. Why do you think that may be?

The Super Sprouting Soybeans Jaime Alena Schwoch

Hey team,

You made it through your experiment and it appears that you indeed saw differences! You all did a great job! I look forward to your poster! Keep in mind when working on your poster to illustrate not only species differences but theā€¦
