Profile

  • Time Zone
    Mountain

  • Organization
    U.S. Bureau of Land Management

  • Role
Scientist Mentor: I will mentor teams of students online

  • Research Interests (300 words)
My research background is in Orthopteran bioacoustics (Effects of Increasing Temperature on Acoustic Advertisement in the Tettigoniidae
Cusano, D., Matthew, L., Grapstein, E., & Parks, S.E. (2016). Journal of Orthoptera Research, 25(1), 39-47.). As I'm getting ready to apply to graduate school for Landscape Architecture and Conservation Biology, I aim to research sea level rise, how it will impact the rate of urbanization, and how to keep cities sustainable as environmental refugees begin to flock toward them.

  • Profile Question 1
Can you describe your attitude toward science when you were in high school?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 1 here (300 words):
I hated science in high school, and my family still makes fun of me today for pursuing a degree and career in biology. I didn't get along with many of my science teachers and I don't remember finding myself intrigued by any of my course content as a teenager. It wasn't until I began reading and researching on my own time that I realized how fascinated I was with biology and physics.

  • Profile Question 2
What is best about being a scientist?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 2 here (300 words):
The fieldwork! The majority of my job currently involves hiking to remote field sites around northern Wyoming, identifying various plant species, and digging soil pits.

  • Profile Question 3
What is your favorite plant? Why?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 3 here (300 words):
Larch (Larix laricina) trees are my favorite. Plants that are both deciduous and coniferous are fascinating to me.

  • Capacity: How many teams at a time are you comfortable working with?
