  • Research Interests (300 words)
My research interests are in studying seeds, in particular maize or corn seeds called kernels. Maize kernels are a major food that we eat directly or use to make other foods. Other uses of maize kernels are to make gasoline and plastics. The most valuable portion of the corn plant for these uses is the kernel because it contains a tissue called the endosperm. Plants make seeds with endosperm as a place to store food for the growing and developing plant when the seed is planted. Plants with large endosperms have more stored food and therefore the growing plant has a better chance of survival. In addition, larger kernels provide more food for humans. My research centers on learning about how this very important seed part is made and what contributes to making large kernels compared to small kernels. To study the endosperm during development, we collect corn kernels at all stages of development from types of plants with different kernel sizes. Then we look at how fast the endosperm grows, how fast other parts of the kernel grow and what all these parts look like during seed growth using a microscope.

  • Profile Question 1
What is best about being a scientist?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 1 here (300 words):
By nature, I am a very curious person and the best thing about being a scientist is I am constantly observing and seeing patterns and then asking questions and trying to figure out the answers. To me this makes my work more like a game than work. I am always asking myself, “I wonder if…” I like that I am always doing things not just sitting at a desk. The things I do can be in a laboratory or out in woods or in a farm field. I also like that science is team work and that I do my work with coworkers and students.

Happy New Year!

I just reviewed your project info posting and you have done a very good job putting this all together.  Well done!  You seem to clearly grasp the overall process of photosynthesis and how the color of light affects the…

Nice job.  I particularly like your graph and reasoning sections.  It is always a surprise to students that green light is not used by green plants for photosynthesis because it seems backwards, but you show clearly it is the case.  I…
