Profile

  • Time Zone
    Eastern

  • Organization
    Ohio University

  • Role
Scientist Mentor: I will mentor teams of students online

  • Research Interests (300 words)
My research interests include plant development, signaling (especially signaling involved in flowering), next generation sequencing technologies, bioinformatics, molecular genetics, ecophysiology

  • Profile Question 1
What is your favorite plant? Why?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 1 here (300 words):
My favorite plant is Viola pubescens because it is my research model and possesses a unique and successful breeding system known as a chasmogamous/cleistogamous mixed breeding system. This reproductive system is characterized by plants that can produce two different kinds of flowers on the same plant individual. One flower type is chasmogamous and is cross-pollinated, while the other is cleistogamous and self-fertilizes.

  • Profile Question 2
What is a typical day like for you?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 2 here (300 words):
My days always start with a giant pot of coffee and feeding my bearded dragon Smaug. At work, I am a teaching assistant for multiple undergraduate labs and conduct research both in the lab, growth chambers, and field (depending on season). I also strive daily to promote women's equity in STEM and broad fields via my role in AAUW.

  • Profile Question 3
Do you have advice for students about preparing for a science career?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 3 here (300 words):
My advice for students preparing for a science career is DON'T BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR HELP. I am where I am today because of the dedicated mentors and advisors that have and continue to contribute to my science know how. Whether it is a method you are unfamiliar with, or a general question about science careers/opportunities, reaching out to those with prior experience or expertise is invaluable and can foster great relationships and collaborations.

  • Capacity: How many teams at a time are you comfortable working with?
