  What is your favorite plant? Why?

  
  
• Answer the question you selected for profile question 1 here (300 words):

  The Genus Heliamphora. This is a south american highland carnivorous plants. I am really interested in their ecology, evolutionary history and appearances. I have always dreamt about going to their native habitat in the Guiana Highlands and explore in there. I have chosen this genus for my graduate research.

  When and why did you decide to go into a science career?

  I actually always wanted to be a scientist since I was a kid because both my grandparents were chemists when they were young. They really valued science education and provided me a lot of material for doing experiment on my own since I was young. However, I have gone back and forth on what I wanted to do during adolescence. I finally decided to be an inter-disciplined evolutionary botanist during my first year of grad school. I want to educate people about how important understanding science is to our daily life and I want to help people to appreciate nature more.

  Do you have advice for students about preparing for a science career?

  First, you must be passionate about what you are doing and pursuing. I think the curiosity about understanding the unknown is what drives a lot of scientist pursue their career. Second, you need to have patience. Working as a scientist definitely will encounter many problems and obstacles that require a lot of time to be patient and figure stuff out.
