  • Research Interests (300 words)
I am interested in the mechanism of action of enzymes which are responsible for the polymerization of the cuticle, a layer of fatty acids which coats the surface of land plants.

  • Profile Question 1
Do you have advice for students about preparing for a science career?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 1 here (300 words):
If you are interested in studying research science, don't be afraid to get in contact with labs or universities in your area. Look up labs that study something that you're interested in and ask them if you could work with them as a student. Or look into Research Experience for Undergraduates (REUs) as you enter your undergraduate career.

  • Profile Question 2
What was the first science experiment you ever designed? How did it turn out?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 2 here (300 words):
My first science experiment was to develop a method for expressing a human protein in plants. It was a lot of work going through old papers and many hours trying lots of different methods. Ultimately, I wasn't able to figure out how to do it before I left the lab, but I learn a lot about experimental design and how to think through problems that I wouldn't have normally encountered.

Hi Xavier, that sounds like a cool experiment but what is the mechanism that you are trying to observe? Do you think that the leaves will float better in the sparkling water because the CO2 already present will help them float better or will it be…
