  • Role
Scientist Mentor: I will mentor teams of students online

  • Research Interests (300 words)
My core research interests involve understanding how ecological communities are formed by combining approaches from various subfields. In particular, my dissertation work is focused on understanding how birds may influence moss dispersal based on their different behaviors.

  • Profile Question 1
Do you have advice for students about preparing for a science career?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 1 here (300 words):
Read widely and practice writing. In order for your science to matter, you need to be able to communicate it effectively. While it may seem like this isn't that critical for a scientific field, practicing scientists need to write in order to publish their results, get research money via grant proposals, secure the appropriate permits for their work, and communicate with the public,

  • Profile Question 2
When and why did you decide to go into a science career?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 2 here (300 words):
I began my scientific career by entering into college with the idea that I wanted to pursue environmental science in order to make meaningful change in a world full of environmental problems. As I began studying biology as part of that process, the fundamental world view that biology provided really called to me. In addition, I found that the questions about how the living world works around us provide the information needed to make environmental decisions and so decided to follow that as my career.

  • Profile Question 3
What is best about being a scientist?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 3 here (300 words):
I think the best thing about being a scientist is that life is never dull. One minute you may be in the lab doing work at a microscope, and the next you might be planning a research trip with other scientists from various different countries. My scientific path involves lots of research in the lab, field work, travel, writing, collaborating with other scientists, and teaching. Together these make a very diverse lifestyle which I find very enjoyable!

How do you think the quality of the light itself might differ between sunlight and artificial light? Would that make any difference?
