  • Role
Scientist Mentor: I will mentor teams of students online

  • Research Interests (300 words)
tropical plant ecology/ tropical forest ecology. Climate change. botany. statistics. ecology

  • Profile Question 1
What is best about being a scientist?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 1 here (300 words):
The field work is my favorite part. Getting into the ecosystem, making observations, getting dirty and collecting data in beautiful tropical forests make the number crunching and manuscript revision all worth it!

  • Profile Question 2
What is your favorite plant? Why?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 2 here (300 words):
I especially like wacky plants. Some of my favorite wacky plants are in the stone plant family (Aizoaceae). I like their obscure morphology and size. Oftentimes, one can come across one and not even know it's a plant, because they are so well camouflaged with the surrounding geology.

  • Profile Question 3
Can you share a funny/interesting lab or field story?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 3 here (300 words):
One time, some of my field worker colleagues dared me to stick my head in a termite nest, offing to pay me 20$ if I could hold it in there for one minute. Being that we were surviving on a living stipend of $600 a month plus room and board, 20$ seemed like a lot of money. I stuck my head in there and did not last more than 20 seconds because the termites immediately infiltrated my ears nose, eyes, and mouth. They were attacking me everywhere. After defending myself, I spent the rest of the day smelling like turpentine, with termite juice all over me. Not sure what I was thinking. I did not get the 20$ either.

  • Capacity: How many teams at a time are you comfortable working with?

Thanks for the update, Oscar.  That is the way that science goes sometimes.  Not everything goes according to plan all of the time.  The important thing is that you learned something.  You can always tweak the experiment and try…
