  • Profile Question 1
Can you share a funny/interesting lab or field story?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 1 here (300 words):
Doing field work in the jack pine forests of northern Alberta, I was doing a transect through a section with a lot of downed woody material. It was raining, and I was clutching my clipboard to my chest with both hands, trying to keep my data sheets from getting wet. I then tripped over a downed snag, landing face first in the muck with my hands pinned beneath me. My feet were hung up on the snag above the ground, so rain water was pouring up out of my rubber boots, and down my legs. My field assistant missed the whole thing, and I tried to pretend nothing happened, while the twigs in my hair and scratches all over my face told a different story.

  • Profile Question 2
When and why did you decide to go into a science career?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 2 here (300 words):
I've always been interested in the natural world around me. When I was 3 I mixed up all my mother's make up in the bathroom sink to see what kind of chemical reaction would happen - the only thing that happened was that I made a mess and made my mom furious. My father and I used to spend most weekends at the observatory tracking stars, comets, and other celestial bodies. And I used to bring home all sorts of animals as a child, from mice, snakes, frogs, cats, and dogs. So it was quite natural that I would become a biologist as I grew up and maintained this interest in how natural systems and species interactions work.

  • Profile Question 3
Can you describe your attitude toward science when you were in high school?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 3 here (300 words):
I've always been immensely curious, so though I only had to take 2 sciences for my diploma, I took all three offered at my high school (biology, chemistry, & physics). And I took the advanced classes. And I signed up for science fairs. And I volunteered to do outreach with younger school aged kids... So yeah it's always been my focus. :)

  • Capacity: How many teams at a time are you comfortable working with?
