Politics. Scientists are public servants and we play a critical role in industrial innovations. It would be hard to cite and example of an element of our modern society that doesn’t have its roots in basic science. From antibiotics to iPhones and fertilizers, and climate change mitigation: they all use technology grounded in basic science and they all directly influence economics. Sadly, politicians have started to use and twist science for political purposes. This makes it pretty tough to stay focused on what is important!
