Profile

  • Time Zone
    Eastern

  • Organization
    Colgate University

  • Role
Scientist Mentor: I will mentor teams of students online

  • Research Interests (300 words)
The work in my lab focuses on the physiological ecology of ferns with special focus on reproductive ecology. We ask questions about how water limitation influences photosynthesis and how this structures plant communities and evolution.

  • Profile Question 1
Can you describe your attitude toward science when you were in high school?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 1 here (300 words):
I was an uber science nerd and almost got suspended for missing too many days... the reason? I was out with my mother collecting ferns for my high school science fair project. We spent weeks working on that and it became my first scientific publication.

  • Profile Question 2
What is tough about being a scientist?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 2 here (300 words):
Politics. Scientists are public servants and we play a critical role in industrial innovations. It would be hard to cite and example of an element of our modern society that doesn’t have its roots in basic science. From antibiotics to iPhones and fertilizers, and climate change mitigation: they all use technology grounded in basic science and they all directly influence economics. Sadly, politicians have started to use and twist science for political purposes. This makes it pretty tough to stay focused on what is important!

  • Profile Question 3
    (not set)

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 3 here (300 words):
