  • Time Zone
    Eastern

  • Organization
    Cornell University

  • Role
Scientist Mentor: I will mentor teams of students online

  • Research Interests (300 words)
My current interests aim to understand how physical forces and constraints affect the biological world. My current research looks at the structures of multi-molecular complexes to understand structure-function relationships within plants, specifically the function of transport between cells.

  • Profile Question 1
Do you have advice for students about preparing for a science career?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 1 here (300 words):
Get as much out-of-school experience in a science setting as you can. You can work in a research lab; help local organizations who focus on wildlife restoration projects; become a peer science or math tutor; submit to writing and speech competitions through programs like 4-H, FFA, the World Food Prize; look up professional and college student resumes to see what they have done to get where they are now; research college programs with topics of interest; shadow a professional, such as a doctor, scientist, etc.; become a McNair or Goldwater scholar; and read, read, read.

  • Profile Question 2
Can you describe your attitude toward science when you were in high school?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 2 here (300 words):
I took my passion of social, community, and education outreach and joined it with my abilities in math and science. Always keep your eyes and mind open to new topics that you may be interested in, and always explore and delve into new topics within the subjects that you are particularly good at or like.

  • Profile Question 3
What is tough about being a scientist?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 3 here (300 words):
You have to be self-driven and organized. However, you still need to find your own creativity and excitement within the specific topic you are an expert of. It can be tough at times, but the reward of the 'eureka' moments is worth every failure.

Keegan,

In my junior-senior year of high school, I had a great teacher that gave us an assignment to write an essay on what major we wanted to pursue in college. This required extensive research on not only topics that interested me, but…
