  Do you have advice for students about preparing for a science career?

  If you're interested in being a scientist, my best advice is to get into a lab and conduct experiments as soon as possible! Science is fun, and research is rewarding, but it can be hard work. It's important to get a feel for research to see if you want to pursue it.

  What is best about being a scientist?

  The absolute best thing about being a scientist is being able to do something new and different everyday. There's always a new technique to try or a new question to answer! A scientist is always learning how to do new things, and inventing new things when there is no one to teach you.

  When and why did you decide to go into a science career?

  I decided to become a scientist and study plants because I realized that the careers everyone was suggesting to me (engineer, medical doctor) didn't sound fulfilling. I always loved plants though, and was very excited about the potential for plant biology research to improve the world and human life. I saw plant biology as a way to be both challenged and fulfilled.
