  • Role
Scientist Mentor: I will mentor teams of students online

  • Research Interests (300 words)
I am highly interested in plants, I currently study biotechnology and plant transgenics but in the past I have researched plant anatomy and physiology. I have done some research in mycology and would be able to discuss this. For the most part I like trying to understand how genetics affect plants and their development.

  • Profile Question 1
When and why did you decide to go into a science career?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 1 here (300 words):
I had always loved nature but it wasn't until I was in college thinking about becoming a medical doctor that I decided to become a scientist. I was in a general biology course and we had a few sections on plants and fungi. I just could not get enough about how different they were from what I learned in high school. Since then I have pursued this path and so far I have been in 5 research labs.

  • Profile Question 2
What is a typical day like for you?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 2 here (300 words):
My typical day is quite busy. It generally starts off with feeding the cat and then I head to work. When I get to the university I go directly to the lab and set up for the day. I decide if I will be conducting any experiments or if the day will be spent reading scientific literature. After that I either start an experiment or begin reading. After a few hours I either have to go to class to learn more or I go teach a class of students so that they can learn more. On days I go to class I work on school work and my lab work the rest of the day but on days I teach the rest of the day is spent grading, checking in on students, meeting with struggling students, and preparing for the next class.
