Profile

  • Time Zone
    Central

  • Organization
    Loyola University New Orleans

  • Role
Scientist Mentor: I will mentor teams of students online

  • Research Interests (300 words)
My area is plant systematics and population genetics. I am interested especially in wetland plants, particularly invasive species.

  • Profile Question 1
What is the coolest thing you have discovered or learned about plants?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 1 here (300 words):
While surveying genetic variation of the common reed in the Mississippi River delta, we discovered there were several different genetically distinct lineages growing side by side in the delta marshes - most of which were introduced from somewhere else in the world and some never before described!

  • Profile Question 2
Do you have advice for students about preparing for a science career?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 2 here (300 words):
Get enthusiastic about knowing! Don't just write down what you read or hear about - understand it! Read more or get help from your teacher. Keeping an open and inquirying mind is the key to becoming a great scientist. Of course, actually doing science will keep you engaged.

  • Profile Question 3
Can you describe your attitude toward science when you were in high school?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 3 here (300 words):
In high school, I always wanted to be a biologist. I thought I would want to study animals in the lab until I got to college and realized plants were easier to "work with" because they didn't move and were usually in the same place where you left them. It turns out, I'm a little squeamish also.

  • Availability
I am NOT available, please temporarily remove me from the available mentor list

  • Capacity: How many teams at a time are you comfortable working with?

Hi Team 4,

Thanks for the drawings of your plates, but I was going to ask if you could tell me what you were seeing, so this latest update is very helpful!  I think you sowed your spores in different densities, right?  So, you will want…

Hi Jacob,

Thanks for the updated outline for your experimental plant.  Looks like you have been busy.

Did you see Dr. Chamber's reply to Joseph on Feb. 27 about fern spores being hermaphroditic (not solely male or female)?
