    I am interested in understanding the developmental and physiological responses of plants to climate change. Most work in my laboratory focuses on the mechanism that leads to altered flowering time of plants grown at elevated carbon dioxide.

    Do you have advice for students about preparing for a science career?

    My advice to students interested in science is to make sure that they feed their natural curiosity. This is the driving force behind every scientist.

    Can you describe your attitude toward science when you were in high school?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 2 here (300 words):
    When I was in high school, science was more a body of fascinating facts about the natural world. This was enough to make me an enthusiastic consumer of the information. It was in college where I learned the nature of science as a profession and a complex social activity.

    What is tough about being a scientist?

    Being a scientist is tough because much of the time, the hypotheses that we generate are not supported by our today. It takes a while to understand that this is not really disappointment or "being wrong" because we learn just as much from "what is not involved" in a phenomenon as we do about "what is involved" in a phenomenon from an inaccurate hypothesis.
