  • Research Interests (300 words)
Molecular biology, biochemistry, and genetics of plant-pathogen interactions and the regulation of genes involved in host disease resistance signaling. Transcriptional, translational, and post-translational regulation of genes involved in signal transduction of disease resistance.

  • Profile Question 1
When and why did you decide to go into a science career?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 1 here (300 words):
I grew up as the child of a 5th grade science teacher and high school algebra teacher (yes, I had them both as teachers in school). I also worked on my uncle's corn and soybean farm during the summers and after school. This gave me a mix of science, math, and agriculture backgrounds that I carried with me through college. When I discovered that I could actually do scientific research on crop plants as a career, I decided that this would be a great fit for me. I love being able to use science to understand how plants interact with their environment.

  • Profile Question 2
What is your favorite plant? Why?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 2 here (300 words):
My favorite plant is the potato. This is not only because I use potatoes in my research, but they're fun to grow, they give us healthy food, they have pretty flowers, and there is a tremendous amount of diversity among cultivated and wild potato species. Plus, everyone loves potatoes, right? Did you know that the average person eats about 120 pounds of potatoes every year?!? Wow!

  • Profile Question 3
Do you have advice for students about preparing for a science career?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 3 here (300 words):
If you find yourself always wondering how things work or asking questions like "why?", "how?", etc., and want to try to figure things out for yourself, then science is a great fit for you. Always keep asking questions and learn about everything around you.
