    When and why did you decide to go into a science career?

    I grew up on a farm in Kansas. When I was in high school, there were 4 years in a row that disease and hail storms destroyed the wheat and sorghum crops: I decided I would try to solve the disease problems rather than be a farmer.

    What is tough about being a scientist?

    The toughest part of being a scientist now is obtaining the funding to conduct the research. Mediocre research does not bring in grant support, the scientist as to be on the forefront of new ideas and technology to remain competitive.

    What is your favorite plant? Why?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 3 here (300 words):
    Citrus is my favorite plants. My whole career was based on conducting research on graft transmissible pathogens of citrus. It is an international crop, and a relative small group of close knit scientists who have a history of cooperation and working together to solve mutual problems.
