Profile

  • Time Zone
    Eastern

  • Organization
    Rochester Institute of Technology

  • Role
Scientist Mentor: I will mentor teams of students online

  • Research Interests (300 words)
I coordinate the Community garden at RIT, and I am interested in sustainable gardening. I teach several plant biology courses including Science in the Garden and Plant Molecular Biology.

  • Profile Question 1
Can you describe your attitude toward science when you were in high school?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 1 here (300 words):
Science was always my favorite class in high school, especially biology. Our classes were small, and our teachers would tell us about their experiences in college. We did lots of cool experiments, especially microbiology and soil biology. I don't really remember studying plants at high school. My love of plants came later.... but biology was definitely my favorite class.

  • Profile Question 2
Do you have advice for students about preparing for a science career?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 2 here (300 words):
Be curious. Look around outside and notice changes. Work hard at your classes, science and math, but also English. Scientists need to be able to communicate their discoveries. Read... about science, but also about scientists. Don't be afraid to be nerdy!

  • Profile Question 3
What is best about being a scientist?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 3 here (300 words):
The Wow factor of seeing or discovering something new, or when something you have struggled with finally works out.

I will check out your data later in the week.

Did your seeds sprout yet? I'm interested because some of my students (at RIT) are working on a similar project with road salt and lettuce seeds.

Hi Bean Grutters,

What type of plants are you working with?

I'm Dawn, I live in Upstate New York (Rochester), but I'm originally from England.  I teach at the Rochester Institute of Technology, and I have 2 cats.
