  Polyploidy - having more than the "standard" diploid 2 copies of the genome - is well studied in plants, and is something I was introduced to very early on in my scientific career, but continues to blow my mind every time I spend more than a few minutes thinking about it.

Hi Onyx, apologies for the delayed response! I think this is a really interesting question you're all looking at. I think the main thing you're going to have to consider in setting up the experiment is whether or not you're adding the same total amount of nutrients for each of your questions - you'll need to look into the concentrations of the fertilizers for that. If you know you'll be adding the same amount of total nutrients, then you'll know that any difference you see in your plants is due to macro vs micro nutrients, and not the total amount of nutrients added!

Hi Jorge, good question! Nutrient interactions with plants depends on the type of plant. In general, the three nutrients that plants tend to get from the soil are phosphorus, potassium, and nitrogen. They need all of these nutrients, but too much of any of them will actually hurt the plant - for example, having too much potassium actually means most plants can't utilize the nitrogen in the soil, so they become nitrogen deficient even if there's enough nitrogen around them.
