    My research interests primarily center around the marine environment and marine conservation. I have previously worked extensively with genomics and sequencing entire microbial genomes. Most of my work is genomic/biochemical (I currently work in the Mercury Analysis Laboratory of my company), and my graduate project will follow suit. The good thing about science is that many concepts can be applied across fields, and therefore I have worked with plant cells and used plants as ideal study organisms in my coursework.

    Can you share a funny/interesting lab or field story?

    I am a big scuba diving enthusiast. But I always dive with integrated weights (adding weights helps you achieve buoyancy underwater, and integrated weights are added directly to your BC, which is a wearable jacket like device where the tank attaches). Well when I was interning in Bermuda, we were scuba diving on almost a daily basis (collecting data underwater using transects and cameras). One day, my BC malfunctioned and I had to borrow one from the field station. This BC did not have integrated weights but rather a weight belt (which you put on last like a normal belt, just with weights attached). At the end of the dive, I took off my BC as normal and handed it to the boat. Problem was I now had an addition 12lbs attached to my hip and no additional flotation, so I started sinking to the ocean bottom at an alarming rate! I managed to get my belt off and drop it at about 20ft under water and swim to the top. Ended up having to go diving again to retrieve it the next day!

    What is tough about being a scientist?

    Science often requires precision and can get repetitive. Even if your preliminary results are extremely interesting, you must validate them and make sure they can be reproduced in the lab again before moving on to the next step. Occasionally this can be a very tedious component of research.

    Do you have advice for students about preparing for a science career?

    The best thing you can do is get hands on experience. It is one thing to read about scientific discoveries/theories in a textbook but a completely different thing to be immersed in the lab or in the field. Take advantage of opportunities to volunteer and don't be shy about reaching out to scientists about volunteer opportunities and internships.
