Scientist Mentor: I will mentor teams of students online

  • Research Interests (300 words)
My personal research interests include the communication of scientific rhetoric to the public sphere and the broad education of the general populace on contemporary environmental issues.

  • Profile Question 1
Can you describe your attitude toward science when you were in high school?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 1 here (300 words):
Science has always been one of my favorite subjects. The opportunity to explore the natural world around me has proved invaluable and the things I learn never cease to amaze me. In high school, I discovered my avid interest in biology and ecology and thus began my educational journey through the field of Environmental Science. I was lucky enough to have a wonderful AP Biology teacher who provided ample opportunity for me to explore the world of plants and to experience first-hand, through numerous projects and experiments, the intricacies of these organisms' systems. It was such exploration that motivated me to pursue a degree in Environmental Studies and work towards the preservation of the natural world.

  • Profile Question 2
What is best about being a scientist?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 2 here (300 words):
The best part about being a scientist is the opportunity to ask questions. Ever since I was little, I loved to ask why and how questions of the world around me. Why are plants green? How do flowers know when to bloom? Science provides the perfect platform in which to ask such questions and acquire answers. The more I learn, the more questions I have, and the more I get to explore the world.

  • Profile Question 3
When and why did you decide to go into a science career?

  • Answer the question you selected for profile question 3 here (300 words):
I decided to pursue a degree in science in eighth grade after I competed in the Texas State Science Fair. My project was focused on the river in my hometown and how tourism was degrading the natural ecosystem. This project thus unearthed a desire in me to preserve and protect nature, and, ever since then, I have actively pursued activities that would allow me the opportunity to connect this joy of the natural world with the science behind it.
