Profile Question 1
What was the first science experiment you ever designed? How did it turn out?
Answer the question you selected for profile question 1 here (300 words):
The first science experiment I ever designed was in a summer marine biology class in middle school. It was a mark-recapture study of snails in an estuary. It went TERRIBLY. My partner and I painted the shells of 400 snails and released them. We captured ZERO back the next day - which meant we couldn't use the mark-recapture method to estimate how many lived in the estuary. But a failed experiment doesn't mean we didn't learn anything!
Profile Question 2
Can you describe your attitude toward science when you were in high school?
Answer the question you selected for profile question 2 here (300 words):
I was very interested in lots of subjects in high school - it's okay not to have a linear path or a 'set' interest in high school (or college or grad school!). I enjoyed organismal biology the most - learning about plants and animals - but it wasn't clear that you could have a career studying plants or animals. I hadn't met anyone who did that - many of the scientists in the area I lived were chemists.
Profile Question 3
When and why did you decide to go into a science career?
Answer the question you selected for profile question 3 here (300 words):
There wasn't one moment - I don't think most people can point to one, if they're being honest, and it's always easier in hindsight. There are many small moments and steps - classes you take and like, teachers you have that encourage you, mentors whose work you enjoy and support you.
